Oktoberfest

WHAT?
Surely it’s everyone’s dream…one of the largest festivals in the world where all you do is relax, wonder around the wonderful city of Munich and drink LOTS of beer!
Some say that if you haven’t been to Oktoberfest, you haven’t lived. One of the most famous and most incredible festivals in all of Europe, Oktoberfest is held in Munich, southern Germany, and over 6.5 million visitors come to drink the delights of Germany every single year. Everyone who loves a glass of the good stuff should go at least once in their life, and Oktoberfest sees visitors travel from all over the world – Great Britain, Germany, France, Brazil, Australia, Japan, the USA and a lot more.
Although primarily a beer festival, there are lots of other exciting things to do there as well; a selection of 14 main tents that each has a different feel about them - from the trendy Hippodrom with an additional sparkling wine bar to the Hacker-Festzelt with a head-banging rock band playing every night from 5:30 to the Schottenhamel, the most important tent of Oktoberfest.
WHEN?
This year the world-famous festival will be held from 20th September until 5th October.
WHERE?
Oktoberfest is held in the southern German city of Munich, in the province of Bavaria. Munich is a unique city where the old meets new; attractive, traditional streets and buildings combined with huge modern skyscrapers and shopping centres make Munich an intriguing city to visit.
HOW DO I GET THERE?
The best way to reach Munich by sea is to take a ferry from Newcastle to IJmuiden (Amsterdam) or from Hull to Rotterdam or Zeebrugge, and then make your way through the continent by road or rail to Munich.
2 people and a car from Hull to Rotterdam Europoort will cost you around £280 return, including cabin accommodation, while a return ticket from Newcastle to IJmuiden with a cabin will set you back around £300, for 2 plus a car. The same crossings for foot passengers are usually about £80-£100 per person. The cheapest prices we found were on www.aferry.co.uk, though it’s always worth hunting around for a bargain!
