Some tips for a clever holiday beating the credit crunch

Shop around

Look and book online for good deals, use comparison websites. A simple trick here is to compare the prices from a comparison or holiday website to the prices directly offered by the actual operators (it could be a flight, a ferry, hotel etc), you may be able to avoid paying the commission charged by these travel websites.

Don’t forget the Golden Rule: Book Early

Book your holidays including flights, ferries, hotels, travel insurance etc in advance and you can enjoy some great savings.

Travel off Peak

If possible avoid the peak summer period for your holiday. You can almost certainly find some bargain prices outside of school holidays, and who knows - you might get in your boss’ good books too by not going away while everybody else is.

Use your imagination

Think of ways to do things that cost pennies not pounds! Look for free events in your holiday destination. Key here is to plan before you go and do your research.

Go with your head and not your heart

Before booking a hotel, think of the time you are going to spend in the hotel room, if you plan to go around and explore the place rather than stay in the room go for comfortable but cheap options such as bed and breakfasts, hostels etc rather than plush star hotels.

Keep a check on Overseas spending

Do some research and plan your budget before going; don’t go for hasty cash withdrawals from ATM’s abroad, you will get stung by hefty bank charges and conversion rates. Look around for low or no fee cards - Abbey’s Zero card, Nationwide’s Gold Card and Post office Travel Money Card are just some of them.
