Once all your ferry bookings, resort accommodations etc are sorted, it’s time to turn your attention to some of the critical but often forgotten issues.

Make sure to get your vehicle fully serviced with particular attention to battery and fan belt so that they function properly even in low temperatures.

Do not forget to take windscreen scrapers and de-icers to avoid any visual obstruction problems. Also matches and lighters come in handy to thaw frozen locks.

It is always advisable to fit snow tyres when driving through the Alps although it is not a legal requirement, however it is mandatory and a legal requirement for drivers to carry snow chains when driving through snow and ice. Snow chains usually attached to the drive wheels of the vehicle provide extra traction and stability.

Most UK drivers are unaware of this as it is not a legal requirement here and innocently get into trouble with the local authorities for not complying with the law.

Also from the 1st of July 2008, it is compulsory to carry fluorescent jackets for every passenger in the car along with a warning triangle, failure to do so could result in on the spot fines of up to EUR 130.00

Another important thing which most Brits are blissfully unaware is that even if you have a fully comprehensive vehicle insurance, it could be downgraded to a third party insurance as soon as you have entered the continent, so make sure you check this and be covered for all eventualities.

And lastly, don’t forget to scrape the wax off your skis unless you are buying new ones!
